Captain Banana

The Beer Stats:

  • Beer Name: Captain Banana
  • Brewery: Three Heads Brewing (New York)
  • Style: Unfiltered Wheat
  • ABV: 6%
  • IBU: 18
  • Pour Color: A very hazy gold to dark yellow color. Little light gets thru.

A decent head as we started to eye each other up. The color was a nice full bodied gold. You can tell this beer was not filtered in the slightest. I hit the foam full force and bested it. A nice wheat flavor to this beer. Almost a slight sour dough flavor to. The banana that they advertise on the side of the bottle gives it a slight sweetness and evens it out nicely. The banana comes through as a slightly under ripened banana. A really nice wheat beer through and through.
Captain banana is another great logo and story from three heads. Luckily it's also another good beer. You can tell right from the get go that if you don't like unfiltered beer this isn't down your alley and the wheat flavor is gonna be heavy. The balance that the banana brings to the mix is what makes it a easy sipping beer. Great beer to take a swim in and make my return to beer reviews! Glad i got to try it with some cookie dough at hometown throwdown at lovin cup recently!!!!

Common Man

The Beer Stats:
  • Beer Name: Common Man
  • Brewery: Three Heads Brewing (New York)
  • Style: Lager/California Common
  • ABV: 5.5%
  • IBU: 36
  • Pour Color: Golden and light easily past through

On the pour this one was a perfect gold and see through. Light traveled through it with ease. It had a nice pale malt scent to this one off the top. The head fluffed up quickly. It fought it out with me for about a 1/4 of the first glass. The taste out of this one is bitterer then you would expect with a IBU of 36. A nice full wheat flavor or almost biscuit comes right at the sip. Unlike most lagers though this one has a nice lasting flavor. Echos of the full flavor go on forever in this one.
When I think lager I always have flashes of bud. That is not what this beer is at all. It's got a crisp bright flavor that isn't overly sweet and nasty. The common man name doesn't do this one justice cause it is a super beer in disguise. Giving the craft drinker just as good a journey as someone whose new to the craft beer world.

Loopy

The Beer Stats:
  • Beer Name: Loopy
  • Brewery: Three Heads Brewing (New York)
  • Style: Oatmeal Red Ale
  • ABV: 6.6.%
  • IBU: 64
  • Pour Color: A murky red color

On pour it had a nice head and I was ready to dive in. The smell of the hops were all over the top of the glass as the Face lifted it. The head retained well although the photo doesn't show it. On taste it's also the hops that are the star of this one. Pine and citrus tones hit you hard and echo on. With the oatmeal though the body of the beer is a little thicker. When it's in your mouth it tastes like a red ale, malty and earthy, not just a red IPA. My Mustache favorite list is getting outta control with beers like this one out there.
This one reminds me of Cascazilla alot but still very different. A real delicious maltyness that Cascazilla doesn't have. Cascazilla though has a sweetness to it's maltyness that this one doesn't have. Loopy is an amazing ale that leaves this mustache again thanking the Face for what he does. I'm happy anytime Face pours it and splashes it on me.

Java Sutra

The Beer Stats:
  • Beer Name:Java Sutra
  • Brewery: Three Heads Brewing (New York)
  • Style: Coffee Porter
  • ABV: 6.5%
  • IBU:55
  • Pour Color: Dark but lets through a little light.

The Face poured this one and the head was high for awhile. A sweet almost caramel and roasted scent comes off the glass. With the first sip you get that nice smokiness. It's slightly sweet but also very bitter from the coffee and smoke. This one also has a nice strong hop flavor. Most porters just leave it for the malts to do the talking. This gives the hops a real strong character at the end of the taste. That, to me, seems to be the lingering flavor in the follicles each sip. This one is a really good porter.
Java Sutra was the first Three Heads I had and loved it. The more they make the more I like of their beers. This one, like I said, has that great hop flavor on top of the normal flavors of a great coffee porter. If you start your Three Heads experience with Java Sutra because of this review, YOU'RE WELCOME!

The Kind

The Beer Stats:
can't see it well but yes that is a 3hb pint glass
  • Beer Name: The Kind
  • Brewery:Three Heads Brewing Company (New York)
  • Style: I.P.A.
  • ABV: 6.8%
  • IBU: 76
  • Pour Color: A Slightly murky golden color

The head of this beer is quite nice and thick as you pour. Bathed in it you realize that they had no problem with hopping this delicious brew up. The curl was hard to maintain as I was drenched in both citrus and pine tasting hops. You have to send a search party out to find the malts in this one. Luckily this mustache loves chewing on hops if need be. Honestly this is a nice kicked up IPA.
3 Heads have only been around for a year. With there ability to craft a great IPA, Black IPA, and a Coffee Porter that put other brews to shame, expect more reviews of their beers. Three Heads is local and amazing so the face will be getting more and the reviews will be coming.
